SWAMP TROMP – JW Corbett Wildlife Management Area – 15 miles

FAST PACED – DIFFICULT

The “swamp” will probably be somewhat dry (maybe ankle deep) in a few spots, so be prepared to get your feet wet. We will hike in from Hungryland Boardwalk on the blue trail to the Ocean to Lake trail and on to Hole in Wall (this is an area on the OTL that is a Cypress Dome with lots of “knees” and bromeliads. It is the most beautiful when you are wading through the water I think, but even if dry it will be gorgeous). We will stop for lunch at Bowman Island campsite either before or after hiking in to Hole in the Wall. I expect it to be HOT so please bring several liters of water (you will be turned away if you do not have AT LEAST 2 LITERS), AND a hat, sunscreen, bug repellant, and a snack/lunch are suggested.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not sign up for this hike if you have any doubts about completing this distance in wet conditions. There are other hikes more suitable for you.

PLEASE NOTE: Most addresses or names you put into GPS take you to the Beeline Highway (FL 710). CORBETT is actually a right turn off the very western end of NORTHLAKE BLVD and then 3 miles north. If you put EVERGLADES YOUTH CONSERVATION CAMP into google maps, it should bring you to the Corbett Entrance and then stop. You then simply have to go in another half mile, bear right at the sign for HUNGRYLAND BOARDWALK and EVERGLADES YOUTH CAMP. When you reach the entrance of the YOUTH CAMP please to not go any further, but turn left following the signs for BOARDWALK and PARKING FOR HIKERS ONLY.
Be wary of any directions that do not take you to the very end of Northlake Blvd and then NORTH.

Upon entering Corbett there is a yellow pole with a small “mailbox” that contains payment envelopes (see pictures below). If you are under 65, please put $3.00 in the envelope ($6 for cars with 2 or more), keep the receipt, and place the envelope in the slot above it. Display the receipt on your dash when you park. There are no attendants so please bring the right change.
