SUMMARY:Orionids Meteor shower\, primitive camping at Oak Creek
DESCRIPTION:**UPDATE : This event is drawing closer\, so just a little update. Visibility factors are looking excellent at this point. Weather forecast calls for clear all night long\, we hope it stays that way.** \nThe way meteor shower viewing differs from other celestial viewing\, is you wouldn’t normally use a telescope. You will see more by simply looking towards the sky in the general area of Orion. I have a tendency to get a very tired neck looking up while sitting in a chair\, so I plan to bring a tarp\, or sheet of anything\, kick back and relax\, backpack or cushion to prop up a bit\, because why not. It’s a very zen activity. \nI attended the tropical Trekkers backpacking 201 event at this location this weekend – once the weather cleared the views were awesome. \nAny questions on what to expect\, what to bring\, feel free to reach out. \n**The Orionids will peak on the night of October 21–22\, delivering about 10 – 20 meteors** **per hour.** \n**We will be camping at Oak Creek north and south campsites. To camp out we will be sharing campsites\, message or reach out anytime to Janet or Walter to get details and confirmation of space.** \n**Or\, if you want to make your own reservations there are probably a few sites still available. Google south Florida water management special use license. A link will take you to SFWMD.gov website\, select tent camping and then look for Oak Creek. It is located in the Kissimmee River Floodplain. On the left click on recreation and on the dropdown click special use license. You will have to create a login if you don’t already have one. You can choose Oak Creek North or Oak Creek South\, they’re all very close. Put in arrival date\, then select check out date.** \n**There are dark-ish skies and open horizons for viewing from the campsite.** \n**The moon phase is waxing gibbous at a 70%+\, but will set at 3:00 in the morning for a much darker sky.**\n**The Orionids are related to debris trail left last time Halley’s Comet passed close to us in 1986\, and is annually one of the best times to see increased meteor activity.** \n**There will be an optional hike on Thursday. The trail out to the iconic geographic landmark of Micco Bluff is just a few miles out\, and beyond that the Florida Trail skirts east of many open marshes in the floodplain of the Kissimmee River\, a great location for bird watching. Length of the hike will be determined by trail conditions\, but less than 8 miles.** \n**Campsites are primitive\, picnic tables\, fire rings\, and zero restrooms or running water. There is acess to the Kissimmee for filtering water.** \n**You will be able to drive right up to your campsite. You will need to bring your food\, water\, tent\, bedding\, clean clothes\, toiletries\, bug spray and sunscreen. Remember we practice leave no trace so you will also need to have a trowel to bury your body waste or carry everything out.**\n**Bring firewood for the fire ring.** \n**Janet Miller 561-385-8676** \n**Walter Ahern 423-430-4164**
